Snails in Space: The Adventures of Gale the Snail is a delightful picture book based on an actual NASA study author Ashley Madni had the pleasure to work on. It has been brought to life by the mother-daughter team Mendy Nelson Williams and Ashley Madni.
Gale, a snail named in honor of the most famous crater on Mars, desires to travel beyond her pond and find a way to be helpful. She packs her belongings and heads to California to volunteer to travel to outer space. After much training Gale and her friends reach the International Space Station, where Gale can realize her true calling of helping. And in doing so, she grasps just how vast the universe is.
Written in amusing four-line stanzas with rhyming text that bounces along, combined with the bright, vibrant, digitally designed illustrations from Mendy Nelson Williams, Snails in Space works well for a read-aloud with a younger audience. Little eyes will be drawn to Gale’s adventures as they explore the bold colors, lines, and shapes on the pages.
While geared toward younger children, Snails in Space: The Adventures of Gale the Snail is an entertaining read-aloud sure to delight readers of all ages. Space-loving kids will find this book to be especially fun and enjoyable to read again and again.
